This unique project was founded by La Grande Traversée des Alpes (France) association in 2001. It was not necessary to install new hiking trails as the Via Alpina travels along the already existing network of Alpine paths. The single stages are not longer than 6 hiking hours, no special Alpine equipment is required (such as ropes, crampons, etc.). Every stage offers at least one possibility for overnight stays in a mountain hut or in one of the hotels down in the valley. Since 2004 all routes are signposted with the Via Alpina logo and feature a detailed information board. Additionally, the website www.via-alpina.org provides more detailed information about the single stages, altitude profiles, hiking times, kilometers, and a lot more. Information brochures are available in five languages (Italian, French, Slovenian, German and English) and can be ordered online.
The main aims of Via Alpina are the development and promotion of gentle tourism within the Alpine region, by increasing the Alpine identity at the same time. Since 09 February 2005, Via Alpina supported by its partners "Alliance in the Alps" and "Network of Alpine Preserves", ranks among the very first projects of the Alpine Convention.
